11th August 2018 - Spielberg - Red Bull Ring

The weather is still a bit iffy this morning. Cloud over the surrounding mountains. Perhaps we'll see them if the weather improves!! We headed to our local village Wald am Schoberpass for breakfast. Nothing was open so we headed 15kms down the road to Trebien which was on our way to the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. We refueled and had breakfast in the service station restaurant. Not bad. After breakfast we headed to Spielberg via a beautiful road that wends its way through the mountains along a valley. Unfortunately there was patchy rain and the roads were very wet so we took it easy. We eventually got to the Red Bull Ring and Colin found the place where he was to pick up his ticket. We found out where the general admission area was for our "green" tickets. It was miles away round the other side of the track. We eventually found the parking field allocated to us and parked the bikes in the nearest spot to the entrance. Unfortunately the attendant spotted us and told us to move to the area he had allocated us. There was no charge for the parking but it was 15 mins from the track!! When we found the area allocated to our tickets the view was not particularly good. It was banked with a reasonable slope but there was a grassy bank near the track blocking our low level view. All we could see were the tops of the riders helmets as they headed for the corner. There was an elevated (north) stand which was high enough to get a good view of the track. Danny and I set up our Aldi chairs half way up the slope and watched what we could. Luckily there was a screen nearby so we could refer to that. I used the live timing App on Colin's Motogp account on my phone to keep up with proceedings.
This is what we could see from our viewing area.

Some local fans sitting beside us.

Danny forgot his sun hat!!
The weather had cleared and it had become quite hot. When the racing was over we headed back to the bikes. We picked up  Colin on the way as he had been watching the racing through a fence near a corner at the top of the straight. We got on the bikes and headed back the way we came but the cops wouldn't let us turn right when we wanted to. We went round in circles trying to find our way to a road we knew. Eventually we found one and headed back to the house. We went back the way we had come. The roads had dried out and it was a great ride back except for some Harley rider who had decided to travel  way under the speed limit holding up all the traffic through some spectacular sweeping bends with views to match. We decided to have dinner in the Gasthoff Fink in the village but it was closed. The reason I keep mentioning Gasthoff Fink is that our host, Karl recommended it. Instead we went next door to Gasthoff Leitner and had a slap up feed. Unfortunately they only took cash ( dodging the tax man). I didn't have any cash so Colin and Danny had to fork out. After dinner we headed back to the Cowshed down the rough gravel track. When we got there Danny wasn't with us so I headed back to the village to see if he had had a problem. I couldn't find him anywhere so I headed back to the house in case he had taken a wrong turn and eventually found his way. Still no Danny at the house so this time I went back to look for him down one of the ravines!!! Just as I was about to leave Danny appeared on the track. He had taken the wrong turn down an even worse gravel track and had to retrace his route when he worked out he had made a mistake. He's getting plenty of off road experience on this trip. Karl, our host, said we could have 21 of his beers or two bottles of wine as there were only three of us and we had been charged for four (Danny's brother Max decided not to come at the last minute). We chose the beer. We watched a bit more of the European Athletic Championships before hitting the sack.
