5th August 2018 - Race day at Brno

We decided to take Colin's shorter route across country to the Brno circuit. We managed to get there OK and it certainly was a lot better than going down the freeway. Danny had arranged to meet Jirka Broz at the Monster Energy entrance between 9:00 and 9:30. It was 9:40 by the time we got there. There was no sign of Jirka so Colin and I headed to area "B" to watch the Moto3 race whilst Danny called Jirka. After a while Danny appeared and told us that we were to meet Jirka at the main entrance after the Moto3 race. The race was a freight train from start to finish. The Czech rider Jakob Kornfeld came 3rd which was a pretty good result. After the race we headed for the main entrance to meet up with Jirka. He met us outside the motorcycle club and after a bit of tooing and froing got each of us paddock passes. We had lunch in his sponsors tent and watched the Moto2 race. Miguel Oliviera from Portugal won on the line. Before lunch Jirka introduced us to Phillip Oetl a young German Moto3 rider he sponsors. He was 7th in the race. He was nice young kid and Jirka had a lot of time for him and his father, Peter Oetl who raced 80cc and 125cc bikes in the 1980s.

Jirka also sponsors a young Czech rider, Filip Salac who came last in the Moto3 race.
Filip was a wildcard entry in the Moto3. He is currently racing in the Red Bull Rookies series and coming fourth.

After lunch we wandered around the paddock looking at all the huge trailers used by the teams and the riders. The mind boggles as to the cost of it all.

We watched the Motogp from within the paddock at the end of the main straight before the first corner. I had the live timing on my phone with commentary in english. We could tell who was where at any instant. In the end Dovizioso won from Lorenzo with Marquez third. Marquez increased his lead in the championship. After the race we met up with Jirka and thanked him for his generous hospitality. We all walked back to where our bikes were parked. Jirka said he was hoping to be at the Austrian GP next week and may be able to get some passes.
We got thoroughly lost trying  to get back to Telc. The police closed roads and forced us to go in the opposite direction to the one we wanted. We ended up in the city of Brno. We then asked Mabel to get us to a town on our backroad route. She managed to get us on the freeway and we took the exit to Trebor and were on our way. By the time we got back to the Telc we were rooted as it was still pretty hot. We changed into shorts and headed for the old town for cold beers and food.
It was a great day at the races. We watched the Motogp again on my tablet using Colin's online Motogp subscription. What a team!!! The internet at the flat was great. Tomorrow Colin is heading for Vienna to meet up with Morag and Danny and I are heading for Vesili to stay in a palacial restored farmhouse with his brother Max, son Martin and another friend Jirka.

30th August Ballasholague Farm, Isle of Man

Kms today 112 Kms to date 10,299 We started the day at the Ramsey Sprint an 1/8 mile track along the seafront.  The bikes were amazing from a 50cc step thru to a turbocharged nitro breathing Hyabusa.  The most impressive bike was a record breaking BSA Bantam with a big bore and reed valve conversion.  It went like a rocket! A very special BSA Bantam launched off the line at the Ramsey Sprint Then we had lunch at the Ginger Hall Hotel and carried on to the ARE Motorcycle museum in Kirkmichael.  This was in a private house and the VMCC were there too on a run, so the car park was full of interesting bikes too.  The collection was all British, lots of Greeves and included a Hesketh, the ill-fated 1000cc V twin produced by Lord Hesketh and a couple of DMW's.  A DMW Cortina - Betty might have built the wheels on this one We then went on to Murray's Motorcycle Museum near the airport south of Douglas.  This had a much wider variety of bi...

3rd September Twyford

Kms today 442 Kms to date 11,016 We got up to a forecast of rain all the way back to Twyford.  But when you looked at it more closely there were rain bands and with luck we might be able to miss most of them.  We left at 8 and headed down the M6, which was relatively free of traffic.  We branched off along the M56 to Chester to avoid the traffic and wound our way down A41 to Whitchurch for refreshments.  It was raining off and on all the way so we were a bit bedraggled.  Then on through Telford and Kidderminster.  Once we got there we let Mabel take us home.  It's too difficult to program the interesting routes on the GPS and it takes us along motorways mostly.  These were not my favourite routes but going other ways really needs Google Maps and a lot of stopping to check the map. We got back to Pennfields at 3.  Margaret shouted a birthday dinner for Alan and I at the George and Dragon in Wargrave.  Alan's birthday is tomorrow but ...
