Colin and I were up early this morning as we had to retrieve our bikes from the parking lot of a block of apartments. We took the tram and Colin had a problem finding a place open that sells tram tickets. He has to pay as he is not over 70 and travel free like meeee!! It was only three tram stops to our destination and we managed to get into the parking lot with the security tag we had been given by Anatoly. When we tried to exit the parking lot the bikes would not trigger the boom gate as they were too light. We had to wait for a car to leave and tagged on closely behind it. Mabel got us back to the flat where we loaded up our gear and headed for Berlin. Unfortunately the blue-tooth receiver in my helmet has packed it in so I had keeping looking at the screen to determine which way to go. Luckily it was fairly straightforward to get to the freeway heading north out of Prague. Colin had planned a cross country scenic route so after a while on the freeway we turned off and followed Colin's route. It followed a river and went through a few small towns and lots of villages, very picturesque.
Shortly after we crossed the German border at Bad Schandau a car two cars in front was pulled over by a couple of armed police. Probably hasn't paid his parking fines!!! We started heading to the autobahn for the last leg (130kms) to Berlin but were forced to take detours due to road closures. Just like the Czech republic!! We had lunch at a place called Karenc in a Greek restaurant. I ordered a Greek salad and it came with sauerkraut and no fetta cheese .... rubbish.
We reached our hotel on the Otto-Suhr Alle in Berlin at around 4pm and unloaded the bikes. We paid for parking in the hotel car park out the back EUR 6 per day for both bikes. Then Colin and I had a cold beer in the room as it was 31C outside ... bloody hot. We were waiting for Morag who was due to arrive at Berlin's main station from Prague at 4pm. We waited, waited and eventually got a call to say she was lost. Colin went and rescued her like a gallant husband. We decided to buy tickets for the Hop-on-Hop-off bus yellow route as recommended by Barbara Stasenka. I bought them online as I was the only one with decent internet access. The Wi-fi at the hotel was hopeless. The tickets were emailed to me which meant they had to be printed, but where? We went for a feed at a "happening place" as Colin called it and then went on to an internet cafe Morag had used earlier. Everything was in German on the computer screen even though I selected the option to change the language to English. The guy in charge didn't have a clue so we fumbled around and eventually managed to print the tickets. All good now so we headed back to the hotel and bed.
