26th July - San Sebastian and Colin's 67th birthday

Kms to day 200
Kms to day 3,948

After brekkie we headed for the world famous Guggenheim museum. I had seen it before, so while Alan visited it I planned to find the Biskaiko Zubia, the first example of a pontoon suspension bridge in the world and one of the few still operating. I had a bit of difficulty finding it having to navigate from memory. The bridge was built to support a section of road that was moved from side to side suspended on cables.
This is the section of road suspended by cables.
This was needed because the docks were inland from the bridge. I did a bridge walk over to the other side and back. There were photos showing what the view was back in the day.
The way it used to be.
I found my way back and met Alan where he had parked his bike. He enjoyed the Guggenheim which had an exhibition by Joana Vasconcelos that included a giant pair of high-heels made from saucepans and a chandelier made of tampons! We set off for San Sebastian. Mabel didn't have the latest maps and missed a few new roads and we ended up having to ignore her and navigate by road signs. So coming into San Sebastian I had to use my memory from 2015 to navigate into the old town. Alan wasn't much use as the last time he was here was 60 years ago! He did an exchange with a local lad Luis Inchausti in 1958. We had arranged to meet Luis the next day, so we parked under the cathedral and set out to explore. We headed to the main beach La Concha and Alan started to reminisce. On the way back I realised I didn't have my keys we found them still in the top box! We rode over to Zurriola Beach and met Maria our Airbnb host. She lived in an apartment complex that was built where the bull ring used to stand. Alan went to a bull fight there when he was last in San Sebastian.
Maria told us about a jazz festival going on at the beach. So we unloaded the bikes and headed off for some dinner and jazz.  The big stage had a local woman performing so the crowd were enthusiastic, but she was more europop than jazz.
The free jazz concert.
I managed to drop my drink spraying all around me so we moved on to another stage. This had a 4 piece jazz band led by the electric bass player who did some crazy solos on his bass. They had great saxophone and keyboard players too. After their set was finished we headed home to a hot bedroom but there was a fan.
The view from our bedroom window.
On the way Alan bought me a coffee and cake for my birthday. I'll reciprocate when its his in September.
